U.S Capitol Visitor Center Washington, DC The ninth, and largest, addition to the U.S. Capital in Washington, DC, encompasses 580,000 sq. ft. on three below-grade levels, and includes 170,000 sq. ft. of expansion space for the House and Senate. Its five acre footprint is larger than the Capitol's current footprint. The project was conceived because the Capitol itself has inadequate restrooms, stairways, elevators and other facilities to handle a large volume of visitors. The Capitol Visitor Center is designed to accommodate 12,000 people a day, and up to 4,000 at one time. It features a 600-person dining facility, 2 25-passenger elevators, 26 restrooms and two orientation theaters where visitors will view an introductory film before beginning their tour. VDA is providing full consulting services for 20 2- & 3-stop hydraulic elevators, 4 7-stop traction elevators, and 6 escalators. The $517 million project is estimated to complete in Fall 2008.
