TOYS-R-US Times Square New York, NY When the new 110,000 sq. ft. Times Square flagship Toys-R-Us (on Broadway between 44th and 45th Streets) opened in November 2001, it was billed as the world's largest toy store. A translucent façade allows passersby to view the 60 ft. Ferris Wheel and other interactive displays in the store's three-story atrium. The project called for gut renovation of an original 1936 theater, removal of all existing elevators and escalators, excavation of the basement for new elevator machine rooms, and careful engineering for shoring, cutting and installing new steel to support the atrium and glass elevators overlooking the Ferris Wheel. VDA provided consulting services for 6 passenger and freight hydraulic elevators of various configurations and 9 escalators to move shoppers throughout the 4-level store. There is also a LULA Hydraulic elevator.
