VDA is providing services through construction documents for the vertical transportation equipment required in this 4-mile commuter rail extension that will improve transportation between the LIRR Main Line in Sunnyside, Queens (at bottom of picture) to a new Long Island Rail Road terminal in the lower level of Grand Central Terminal. The current design includes 58 escalators, 5 traction elevators, and 8 hydraulic elevators.

The project involves construction of a 4,600 foot tunnel from Sunnyside to the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street. A second 5,000 ft. tunnel would carry LIRR trains from the 63rd Street Tunnel, south under Park Avenue into Grand Central Terminal.

The design portion of the project is complete and the project is near the end of the construction documents phase.
